Contrary to my fears, the pillow turned out to be a perfect match, providing adequate support, sufficient dynamic contouring and surprisingly, dynamic heat management as well (courtesy of the Outlast Adaptive Comfort material). My own experience aside, my relatives, including my aged grandmother, have found the product to be every bit as good as I did. However, nothing is an unmixed blessing and so you must persevere as I list out both the positives and the negatives through a detailed review.
Outlast Adaptive Comfort with PCM Beads
PCM or Phase Change Material is a special polymer that detects the temperature of the body. During periods when the body is too hot, the material absorbs heat and does the reverse when the body temperature is too low. The result is Outlast Adaptive Comfort, a system that enhances one’s comfort by ensuring that the pillow remains comfortable regardless of the season, room temperature and body temperature of the individual.
Visco-Elastic Memory Foam For Enhanced Support, Sufficient Thickness
While the PCM itself regulates body temperature, support is provided by high quality visco-elastic memory foam. This foam, unique to product, ensures that regardless of the sleeper’s body configuration and health condition, the head and neck receive adequate support at all times and in every part of the pillow.
Complementing the excellent memory foam support is the fact that the thickness of the pillow is perfect at 5 ½”. Indeed, this thickness is regarded as perfect for both side and back sleepers, and hence, both types of people will find the product plush and extremely comfortable.
Special Configuration for Side-Sleepers
The product comes with a special variant meant primarily for side-sleepers. Having a gusseted exterior and special size specifications, this side sleeper pillow provides additional support to the neck and head. Apart from support, the somewhat modified dimensions ensure that the product can be manipulated to suit the special sleeping positions that side sleepers sometimes prefer, thereby allowing them to continue sleeping in their preferred position even as they get the many benefits that this product has to offer.
High Thread-count Hypoallergenic Cover With Zippered Closure
A 300 thread-count cover ensures that the pillow surface is never exposed to the sweat that accumulates on one’s head before and during sleep. In this way, the cover protects the memory foam from degradation due to sweat accumulation, and also keeps the unit free from odours. At the same time, the unit is 100% cotton and hence, is hypoallergenic compared to other synthetic linen variants. Last but not least, the presence of a zippered closure on the cover allows for easy removal and cleaning of the cover and optionally, the pillow.
Some worrying points
While I was personally thrilled by the performance of the unit, my friend have noted that the unit is not very bouncy (ie lacks rebound) and hence, may cause people to “sink” into the pillow if they’re used to down-filled units. Further, some users observed that the shape of the unit makes the centre thicker than the extremities and this may not be ideal for users who need to keep the spine perfectly horizontal to the bed. While such perfect horizontal positioning is not the most natural sleeping posture, it may be required for some medical reasons and this pillow does not cater to such requirements.
Despite proving to be somewhat uncomfortable for those shifting from down pillows or those with some medical issues, the unit’s combination of excellent heat regulation, good support and a great hypoallergenic cover mean that for the average user, the benefits far outweigh the problems. Indeed, if you are a side sleeper or even a back sleeper, the Sleep Better Iso-Cool Memory Foam Pillow, Gusseted Side Sleeper ,Standard is one of the few one-stop solutions for obtaining a peaceful and enjoyable sleep without worrying about sweating, poor body alignment or size issues.
